A company I’m working for would like to know what the quantitative costs and qualitative factors are for each?

This depends ENTIRELY on what you are plugged into internally, where you draw data from, and where you send data to.
If your Company Operates as an island, and can send documents out in office compatible format, then it horses for courses. But if you are drawing live feeds from MS specific systems, you have some serious considerations to make with regards to vendors.
Your question sounds simple, but potentially it is not; potentially it could mean a great deal of change. However, if it is All Linux compatible, then, the choice is simpler; But it is in getting to those conclusions that the time and effort needs to be expended in …
I have to support Windows systems at work for a lot of things but we use Linux for all of our servers and I use Linux for all of my personal stuff because Windows is just way too high maintenance and unreliable.
Linux is just less expensive and more secure in every possible way.
And talk about not trusting something, LOL! You stand a lot better chance of getting compromised or losing important files and data on a Windows system than you ever will on Linux.
When SaaS becomes implemented it is going to be Linux all the way.
Linux is the future so you may as well learn it now or be left behind without any marketable skills.
~BTW~ Everybody has an opinion but if they don’t support both Windows and Linux systems and update their knoledge base frequently and can’t converse intelligently about both operating systems then they are just blowing smoke ( Lil jacko!!!!:P )
MS
i think they should concentrate more on which they would want and that should be determined by your needs with it, and then figure out the price, cause you can get different types of microsoft programs and i personally dont trust linux, but it’s your choice!
That’s a loaded and vague question.
Microsoft Windows XP –
Cost of OS? $200
Software? tonnes
Linux -
Cost of OS? $0
Software? pounds
It’s going to depend on what your internal software needs are. If you’re a design house (ICs, software, PC boards), Linux will suffice. If you’re financial, then MS would be the way to go unless you want to make a statement about open-source software.
First you’ll need to decide what your computer objectives are. What’s the end result.
For ease of use nothing beats Windows or Mac OS. Bulk purchases of the software and office suites can bring down the cost.
Freebie Linux like Ubuntu carries with it a steep learning curve and the need of a techie to make sure it plays nice with all of your hardware. Paid for Linux, like Red Hat, removes some of the problems with hardware configuration. But your still looking at a time investment to get everyone up to speed with the way things work in the Linux environment.
Off the cuff, stick to what people are familiar with in your office. Don’t force them to take time away from work to learn a new system.
Microsoft. No one hardly uses Linux because there’s no programs for it.(use XP pro vista has security problems but get it quick.its coming off the market soon!!!)
Because Linux under a General Public Use licence the OS and most programs for use with it are free and the source code is open, so it is much more adaptable, secure and reliable. Great strides and improvements have been made in terms of making it more usable for people who don’t really want to know anything about their computers as well, At this point installing and running a distro like redhat or ubuntu is easier than Windows XP or Vista, and linux will likely run faster than windows because it uses the machines resources better.
The bottom line here is that money spent to run windows machines and paying microsoft hunderds of dollars and hour to program for your company can be better spent paying people have the ability to know how (because the source code is open) to optimize linux to fit your companys needs
if your company relys on the latest eye and ear candy for windows based pc’s then you might want to keep with the moronic mainstream thats sold out to bill gates
if you want to maximize the efficency of the computer hardware you have for specific work applications there is no doubt that that is easier and less expensive with linux (or something UNIX or UNIX based) just because of the very nature of each OS
Okay this is a fact relating to security, the NSA does not allow any microsoft product anywhere in any of their facilities
The NSA does use their own in house tweaked ultra security paranoid version of Linux whos source code is not open cause its ultra secret in house NSA stuff in this particular case but they started with the open source code linux that is out there for free and many distributions
