if you surf the net alot and hate paying high prices for an OS then linux is the logical choice I recomend ubuntu based distros for newbies and of that I use linux mint and love it
They are both good, they just do what they do in slighly different ways. M$ charges a lot of money for their software, Linux does not. Linux is much more configurable than windoze every will be. You can play games on both OSes. Games developers have created a lot more games for windoze, because there are many more windoze machines out there – a bigger market. That bigger market is also why there are scads of viruses, etc., for windoze, but essentially none for Linux.
IF you like getting into the ‘nitty gritty’ of an operating system, solving problems, figuring out ways of making it work, playing with it, modifying and customising it, then Linux is a great OS.
IF you like to install it and have it ‘just work’, and don’t want to have to solve problems, use command lines, search for answers on forums, them windows is better.
Linux has better security.
Windows has more, and better-quality software.
For me it has to be Linux, I had a very expensive disappointment at the hands of Vista.
Nowadays I run Ubuntu 7.10, if you are after a more user friendly option then take a look at Linux Mint 4.0 which comes with much of the software preinstalled.

Both are more than up to the task of out performing Vista, and the 3D graphics are mind blowing, when you run a piece of software called Compiz Fusion.

The online support for both Linux Mint and Ubuntu is second to none, and all covered within Ubuntu forums.

Give it a go, you’ve got nothing to lose as its all free, personally I would use nothing else.
Enjoy.

Linux better programing less bugs works faster… the down side of linux is that there is much less software for it.
Linux is free, but somewhat difficult to use for new users. Windows isn’t, but comes with most computers and is the OS that most non tech savvy users are familiar with.
I use windows XP because I game and vitalization takes away from precious resources.
Linux: Security, takes alot less HD space. Uses less than 4GB
Microsoft: Most people know how to use it, more programs, more stylish
Neither. buy a Mac
For your average user, Windows is probably a better choice. Apart from that, it really just depends on the tastes of the user.
Linux will probably be more difficult to use than Windows, allthough that depends on which distribution you use. Linux also has relatively few programs for it, and very little support from many major software and hardware companies.
Pros to Linux are that it is (usually) free, it is virus free and arguably more secure, and it is more "future-proof" in general, seeing as you can download newer versions at no charge.
Personally I would pick Linux over Windows, but I would also (and do) pick OS X over both.
I would definitely say Linux, but that’s just my personal preference. Reasons? It’s a) open source, which just feels better; b) Most Linux distros are free, which is very different from Windows; c) Security. Thousands of viruses exist for Windows systems, very few exist for Linux and it seems none have successfully launched. Linux is similar to Macs in that way. d) I would say Microsoft OSes tend to be bloated, especially Vista, and memory-hogging, which is not a plus.
One problem is that much of the popular software is only available for Windows – iTunes, IE, Photoshop, etc. However, there are many Linux-compatible alternatives, and then you will still be able to run certain windows software using an emulator. And there’s a vast universe of open source software available only for Linux systems as well.
Here’s a very long list comparing the two: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Windows_and_Linux
