Mandriva Linux is a type of Linux.
Linux is a free operating system that you can use instead of Windows. You can download it for free, but you also have the option to buy a packaged version with documentation.
If you are interested in Linux, you should try a version of Linux called Ubuntu. It is better than Mandriva. Mandriva tries to sell you a lot of things. Ubuntu is 100% free.
You can get thousands of Linux programs for free. You can also still run many Windows programs if you buy something called Crossover Office ($40).
Download the Ubuntu file (about 700MB), and burn it to the CD with the technique explained in the links below. Then boot your computer from the CD. Ubuntu will run from the CD drive. When you turn the computer off, Ubuntu will be gone and you will be back in Windows (or Mac). If you want to put Ubuntu on your computer permanantly, there is an icon on the desktop to install it.
You can also install Ubuntu next to Windows instead of on top of it. To do that, first defragment your Windows hard drive. Then back up all of your files in case something goes wrong with the install process. Then install Ubuntu and follow the directions.

Mandriva Linux was earlier known as Mandrake Linux based on Debian Core!
Its a Linux Distribution just like others… e.g. Red Hat, Fedora, Suse, Ubuntu, Gentoo, etc…
You can downloads its free edition from:

If you need professional help and support..various paid packages are available on the website.
My choice in linux is Ubuntu…as its fast compact & neatly installable distribution..

Mandriva linux is an open source operating system and an alternative to Microsoft Windows. It is free, and if you wanted to you could modify the source code and write you own version or you could sort out some of the bugs in the software.
Currently i live in an area which is Pro Ubuntu, but if you need a lot of programs and you know a little about computers don’t go with Ubuntu Linux, it is very limited in software packages. If you ever get the internet setup on it you can download better packags from thier website.
Use Mandriva with K desktop enviroment (KDE), as it has a similar feel to windows. it is by far the most user friendly version of linux. it however takes a large amount of disk space but if you have a newer computer that wont be a problem. If you have an older computer use Ubuntu instead.
You might want to look at Suse Linux as well, it is unfortunatly not totally free depednfing on the version you choose, it is one the most popular distrobution ever.

If you need to run a Server of sorts then SUSE will a;lso be great but i would go for Fedora Core 4 or 5 (FOrmerly known as RED HAT).
Most of htese versions of linux are totally free but they make their money through end user support and sponserships.

Linux is a ‘free’ Operating System (OS) in the sense that its kernel (the heart and soul of an OS) is free and opens ource. But, generally, u won’t want to use an OS just like that … u need a Shell – bridge between the user and the kernel. This Shell may or may not be open source, may or may not be free (but generally IT IS).
Now when it comes to the different brands (or Distributions or Distros) of Linux, the difference lies mainly in the shell. Remember, strictly speaking, Linux is a kernel and NOT AN OS (because OS = kernel + shell)
Mandriva is one of the many Linux Distros. (There is a long list of other distros … Red Hat, Fedora, SUSE, Knoppix, Ubuntu being some of the major ones).
Actually, Mandriva was previously known as Mandrake (which, btw, is still the more popular name).
