Linux OS or Windows XP OS – what is the difference & which is better?

When choosing a mini laptop (either Ausus EeePC or Dell), I have to choose either a Linux operating system or Windows XP operating system. What are the differences between the two systems, and which is better for a mini laptop that will be used for web-surfing and e-mail?

It really depends on you. I would highly recommend you try both out and determine which you prefer.
Linux will typically install quickly and come loaded with an array of software to get you going. That said, there are issues surfing the web with Firefox on Linux, particularly in regard to sites using Flash. Drop-down menus tend to end up behind the Flash item.
One other thing that doesn’t always get mentioned with regard to Linux and web surfing is media. Many Linux distributions are not going to support many media types you’re used to having out of the bat. The plugins for these typically require additional software to actually work. Some distributions do include this software by default so take care in your choice of distributions and know that you’ll need to find instructions on how to set that up if you chose a distro that doesn’t support the proprietary media by default.
As for speed? Quite honestly, I don’t know how much of a difference you’re going to see unless you start getting under the hood of Linux and tweaking things. Right now, just running a few Firefox windows on my Linux box with about 7 tabs each (maybe 20 tabs total?) I can easily chew through my entire 2gb RAM. CPU usage isn’t really all that different between the two.
I use both and I still lean towards Windows as I tend to have fewer problems with my web surfing experience.
Linux will be faster. If you’re used to Windows, than you would get that. Linux just has different programs and GUI’s that do the same thing. It’s not impossibly hard to get used to, just a change. Linux is also free. Or if its Asus, it may just be built on the Linux kernel and they’re charging for it anyway. I think price would be a difference though. I would choose linux, But if you’re really reluctant to change, and aren’t very techy, go with XP.
Linux without a doubt. This link reveals all http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net/
