Linux help?
I’m trying to get Yahoo Messenger on this laptop that’s running Linux. I really don’t know anything about Linux and I’m planning to change back to windows, but I need to get yahoo messenger on here first for reasons that are really offtopic.
Anyway! when I go to the Yahoo Messenger site it says Redhat 6, 7, 8, or 9? I don’t know what this is, or what it means, but when I download any of them the .rpm files don’t run, how do I run these files?

Just dl gaim. It is a free open source program that supports all sorts of messaging clients like aim, yahoo, msn, icq, etc.
I’m not sure what version you have but I also found this:
http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_47_3991.shtm
It says that it comes w/ gaim and shows you how to find out if it is or not, etc. Probably better than the other two links below.

^Here is where you can dl it. It has a redhat 9 version. The number after redhat indicates the version of the linux program you installed. (e.g. ubuntu’s latest linux os version is edgy and their previous version of linux is called dapper, it is like that but they use numbers instead).

^Since you’re new to linux here is a ‘how-to’ on installing it. Good luck! I don’t have much experience w/ Redhat :X
type in rpm -i NAMEOFRPMFILE.rpm and it may do it….
Alternatively try installing something like gaim or kopete as they can connect to the yahoo messenger chat thingies.
what linux distribution do you have? Red Hat linux is a distrobution.
Hi,
This is totally distribution specific. rpm is the Redhat Linux(fedora)’s preferred way to install software, but other distributions have other ways, like ubuntu uses apt. Can you provide the name of the Linux Distribution you are using. You can find that out usually during the startup of your laptop.
