linux debian?

i have an amd sempron cpu and i wanted linux debian after i heard about it from one of my friends .. i visited the website and downloaded a package for amd64 (thats the closest match) but its not installing on my system is there anything i can do to make it run….

1) AMD64 might not be the right one for you, unless you have a 64-bit system. You should probably go with i386. It worked for me.
2) I’m not sure if you know how to install the OS. In case you don’t: You can’t just download the file and double click it to install like an application. You need to download the file (you can download it here http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r0/i386/iso-cd/ I recommend the second to last one "debian-40r0-i386-netinst.iso") and burn it to a CD using an ISO recorder (download http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm then right-click the .iso file and you’ll see the option to create cd).
Then when you start your computer hit F12 and change the settings to have the computer boot from the cd rom drive. It should be easy from there.
