/home is for user specific files
/usr/ is for program files
/var is for data the varies, most commonly mail inboxes and log files
/etc is for system configuration files
/mnt is for mountpoints of things like network filesystems, usb-drives, and optical media
You’ll probably get better help with a more specific question though.
So you want somebody to write out the Debian manual here on Y.A? Nobody is going to write "everything about" how Linux works. If you have a specific question ask it. If you want a complete run down of the Linux OS, Buy a book.

You can down load .pdf files on the Linux File structure that explains all these directories. For Debain I would get the Debian User Manual and browse through it. Debian has been around for some time. They offer Stable, Unstable and Testing files. Distributions have borrowed these files and altered, modified and change them for their own operating system, so many have a Debian root, even Ubuntu. I don’t know what else I could say.
