Yes, you need to partition your hard drive, to have the different partitions necessary for your Linux. There are 2 important partition you need to configure:
1. Root Partition – "/" – ext3 or ext2
2. Swap partition – "swap"
Without this (2) two, Linux installation won’t be possible. Swap should be twice or thrice your RAM memory.
Other partitions you can also create, such as home, usr, etc. I suggest you create also a home partition. To isolate your data from Linux system data, so that in case your Linux bug down you can reformat and re-install it without touching your data.
it depends on what you want to do if you want to run both then yes you need to create a partition if you only want the linux just pop it in and go
just do a web search to find the needed partition info you need there are tuns of forums in the linux comunity
Simply put the Linux install CD in the tray and start the installation. It will prompt you to install a NEW & SEPARATE Partition for the Linux to go in. That will allow both OSes to reside on the same hard drive. This is called a Dual Boot System.
If you ONLY want the Linux then just install it. BUT, remember if you change your mind again you MUST install Windows BEFORE Linux in a Dual Boot system.
For more info go to the website of the Distro you have and ask in the Forums there. You will get MUCH better Answers there than here.
