Someone asked me about the best way to clean the data from used hard drives so that they can be re-used in new applications. He’s using the current version of Ubuntu. Suggestions on the best way to do this are welcome…. Thanks!

I saw a definition concerning linux boot access:"Boot access is root access". This makes the fact that if someone has physical access to the linux server, he can get root access and copy protected files.
Moreover, if a linux application server has to be packaged and installed "Physically" in companies this will give them access to the files and they can copy them illegally.
I heard of LIDS (Linux Intrusion Detection System) but I couldn’t understand the boot access security.
My question:
Is there a boot level security that enables the fact of packaging server applications and install them in companies without the risk of the code being stolen (especially if it’s in a scripting language php, asp)

Is there a way in Linux [not windows] to connect to more than one wireless network simultaneously using only one WIFI Card?
Is there any distribution or application that can do that in Linux?
Even If I did connect to say 2 wireless networks, say 2mbps each, would I be able to get speeds of 4mbps?

Hi! I’m just looking for a good Java Compiler. Is there any good compilers for Java available for Linux Operating Systems? I want to make applications using Java, but just can’t find an appropriate compiler.
I am thinking of "Eclipse". Is that a good Java compiler, or should I consider something else?
Thank you in advance!

Discuss how we might create a backup and Restore plan of the key linux directories and other key data directories. We also need to outline the application used to carry out this process.

so i have a mac and i get around the terminal and i know most of the commands. ie open application.*
however im trying to figur out linux and im stuck
are there diffrent kinds of linux and therefore different commands.
how do i tell my pclinux to open a .torrent file. same as if i web and double clicked on it.
i know to edit its vi and to read its cat
my question is if im connected to the computer via ssh. and i want it to start download the file via bittorrent,
The open command opens a file (or a directory or URL), just as if you had
double-clicked the file’s icon. If no application name is specified, the
default application as determined via LaunchServices is used to open the
specified files.
[root@localhost Desktop]# eog jj.torrent
-bash: eog: command not found
[root@localhost Desktop]# open jj.torrent
-bash: open: command not found

I have a Linux Application, when I execute the Application as root, the program runs fine. When I execute the application as any ordinary users, the program gives the following error message:
Cannot open shared library ‘./libeeprom.so’, either file does not exist or format is not compatible(Sytem message = ./libeeprom.so: failed to map segment from shared object: Operation not permitted).
ERROR: processing command line option: -FM…
strace the application shows:
old_mmap(NULL, 6548, PROT_READ|PROT_EXEC, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_DENYWRITE, 4, 0) = -1 EPERM (Operation not permitted)
So the true issue here is:
"failed to map segment from shared object: Operation not permitted"
But this operation is fine when I am login as root.
I appreciate if someone can help me solve this problem.

Hi. I’m planning on opening up an internet cafe in another country and really don’t want to pay to license 20 computers with microsoft. I recently found Ubuntu Linux and saw they distribute their operating system for free. How good is it compared to windows? How long does it take to learn? Does it run normal internet applications such as like Yahoo Chat, You Tube and Limewire? What kind of programs can you get that’s similar to Microsoft Office, etc. Basically anything and everything you can tell me about it. The most info. gets the 10 points. Thanks.

I am preparing to switch to UBUNTU, so I am reading up on what Ill need to know. When you install software into linux it seems more like it is really made a part of the operating system.Where as MicroSoft has Programs that sit ontop the OS. They seem to distance themselves more from outside applications.Am I on the right track of thought ?
