We had a tech guy come in because my dads computer sucks, and he has major bottlenecks.. but thats beside the point, the tech guy said that there was speculation that vista is going to be discontinued. any truth?
also i was wondering if linux runs DirectX 10 and other windows applications.

vista will be discontinued when there is a better os out there like the windos 7.Vista will live on even after windows 7 gets out and windows 7 will go through what the vista went through and vista will be like xp the most beloved os
No, Vista is not going be discontinued (at least not until the next version of Windows is released and it goes into the standard maintenance release mode).
You can run windows apps on Linux with Wine. See http://www.winehq.org/ for more information.
Vista isn’t going anywhere for awhile, they’re busy phasing XP out – and already have stopped offering support for most of the previous Microsoft Operating systems.
Vista will not be discontinued any time soon.. Just like windows 98, 2000, and eventually XP it will be phased out by windows 7. (currently in production). Linux will run windows programs using wine but not at 100% compatibility and Direct X10 most likely will not work with Linux.
Vista is going to stay on the market for a while. A company can’t pull out an operating system and force people not to use it just because they want to. Bill Gates said that the next version of Windows might come out next year, but that was for a _beta_ version. We might not see Windows 7 (Vista was #6) for a while.
And no, Linux does not run Windows programs. There’s this thing floating around called Wine which is supposed to let Linux use Windows programs, but it generally doesn’t do very well.
My advice: Stick with Windows. You’re probably not managing business servers or flying the space shuttle so you don’t need Linux.
Vista will still be around until the nest version which is a couple years away still. MS is pulling XP off the shelves to force people to buy Vista so that tech guy should really find a new line of work for making outrageous claims like that.
There programs out there for running Windows based applications on other operating systems, just do a search for which specific program you want to run using Linux. Things like DirectX 10 are also hardware based and you need to make sure that hardware supports Linux also.
yes linux runs windows programs and linux is a lot better then windows becuse linux is a smaller OS that means you will not have any vireses or trogens I have linux it is great
