Download openoffice. It contains a text editior that looks and works just like and earlier version of word and is fully compatible with microsoft formats too.

All these answers are good. Both OpenOffice and AbiWord are installed in this laptop, however as a Linux user since, arguably, 1994, I have to say that if you are using Linux you can get both packages through your distribution update system if you don’t have them already, and I recommend doing so after checking to see whether they are installed right now.
Yes, luckily there are several. The most popular (by far) is the Open Source office suite Open Office. You can download it here:

Nowadays though, you don’t even really need a program. Google Docs offers a great online alternative to Microsoft Word for any operating system with a browser.
