I’m really surprised by what "twinkle" claims. I’ve loaded both
Solaris and RedHat on multiple laptops without ever having a
problem. [Actually, on one machine RedHat defaulted to a
generic graphics driver, so I couldn't take advantage of the
high resolution mode of my graphics card, but it still worked
fine.]
Anyway, a few months ago I tried the "live" OpenSolaris CD,
which allows you to run straight off the CD (or DVD) ***without
having to load it onto your hard drive***. That’s a really easy
low-risk way to try things out. If you don’t like it, just reboot
from your disk and toss the CD.
Because most applications were built for Windows, all else
being equal, you’ll probably be happier with MicroSoft. I
am a big fan of Unix (Linux, Solaris), but my family uses
Windows and that’s the right choice for them. I dual boot
because iTunes doesn’t run on Linux or Solaris.
Hi wella
Not to my knowledge, beware solaris is general best ported to a sun machine, which are generally SCSI and that is generally desktops.
It will take you sometime to get your head around the RED HAT although it was the original it is pretty gritty stuff to deal with.
you are best sticking with the notebooks that have it already loaded.
And i know the laptop idea seems like a good one to cart around and play with its a bit geeky believe it, it is.
But the best of luck have a go but pick an older PC to try any one that will let you load it some have built in firmware that does not allow anything but microsoft software.
i dont know about redhat (new versions called fedora or RHEL),
but ubuntu comes preinstalled on eeePC laptops.
