Is there an open-source alternative to windows that can run exe files smoothly?

I realize there is linux, but I would really like to have something that can run exe files just as smoothly as windows with a lot less bulk than windows. Open-source or freeware would be appreciated. Any Ideas?

First point… Linux is brilliant.
Its a far superior, faster and more stable operating system than Windows with no stupid licensing restrictions. Look at it this way – if you are ditching Windows, why not ditch all the Windows programs with it? Most programs have free open-source equivalents/alternatives which can be just as good / better than the ones you are using.
BUT
You CAN run many Windows programs on Linux using Wine.

It works surprisingly well with many programs. I’ve been running MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Publisher 2007 perfectly on Ubuntu 8.04 for the last year (yes, Office 2007, complete with all the fancy new interface, features and effects). It actually loads and runs faster running under Wine than it does natively on my Vista installation!
Wine have a database of apps which do (and don’t) work, many with detailed instructions on extra steps needed to get particular programs to run (if any are actually needed)…

you can download the wine windows emulator for linux. i know it works good with ubuntu. it makes it so you can run exe files, and even play some direct x games smoothly.
