I talk to friends about it and they say that Linux is going to be the future and that they think Its better then Microsoft. I was looking for a more professional point of view on it.

"Linux is going to be the future" – they were saying that nearly 30 years ago.
There are pros and cons to all OSs.
There are several reasons cited as to why Linux is better…
It’s free – no denying that, but the OS is only a relatively small price, the TOC (total cost of ownership) is about the same when you factor in training and support.
It’s open source – so what? The kernel alone contains 13.5 million lines of code (v2.6.36) mess up the wrong line and it may not boot – how many people do you know can edit kernel code? I personally know just 2 and i’ve been messing around with computers for a very long time.
It’s more secure – it is, only because it’s got less than 3% of the market share – who’s going to write viruses for such little return? One thing it does though, which Windows should do, is not use the admin account by default.
It must be better because companies use it on servers – 80% of companies run Windows servers, 50% run Linux (some companies run both which is why 130% not 100%) – http://www.zdnet.com/blog/microsoft/idc-windows-server-still-rules-the-server-roost/6424
Linux comes with everything I need – it’s true, most distros come with everything except the kitchen sink, whether you want or need it.
Linux doesn’t crash – yes it does, and so do Macs
Over the years I’ve regularly used Windows, Macs and Linux. I run my own Linux webserver, I even like using Linux, but it’s just an operating system and not worth getting my knickers in a twist over.
One thing I really do like about Linux is the update system where all the installed software is updated from the repositories.
One really bad thing about Linux is that you have to be careful about what hardware you buy. Although it’s getting better hardware support is still way behind Windows and Macs.
It’s only good if you aren’t dumb.
hell no microsoft is and always will be better…microsoft was the first and always will be….
My son is a convener of computer studies at a university and he uses Ubuntu a derivative of Linux ~~
No, In opinion and with some facts, by what has better operating software and everything else.
I would order them by Microsoft being the best as it "to me" has a best user interface, and then Mac would be second only because it is a stylish computer, although some things about the PCs does make them less wanted, I don’t know much from experience from Linux but, Microsoft has been on top and the way the trends are/have been they will stay a good PC company.
If you are really familiar with Linux(or operating systems in general), Linux is what you would want to go for, primarily because it’s free. But then if you are someone who needs technical support(over the phone) too frequently, stick to either windows or mac.
Linux is a safe secure and robust operating platform

Overall a Linux based platform can perform most of the tasks equally as well as a propietary platform using the likes of Ubuntu and its derivative distros. However Linux does have its limitations with some applications and in particular gaming. For example I retain a dedicated Windows partition to run specific applications such as Office 2010 etc.

You download the ISO. image of Ubuntu 10.10 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Ubuntu 10.10 can also be run straight from the LiveCD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 LTS and Linux Mint 10 Main Edition which are built upon Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Ubuntu 10.10 they are easy to install and easy to use plus they come with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled
Linux Mint has a similar installer called mint4win (mint4win works the same as the Ubuntu Windows installer so the instructions outlined above are almost identical)
