is linux a mix of microsoft and apple or is it just a third os?

Linux is not a mix of Apple and M$. In fact Apple OSx is based off of a BSD linux kernel.
Linux is a stand alone operating system invented by Linus Torvalds almost by mistake, he had no intentions of it creating such a strong following. In fact his quote is now quite famous, he made this while beginning to write the linux kernel.
"I’m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones." (This was the launch of Linux)

Linux is an open system, however some people say that it has been developed by a hacker from windows codes but its not for sure. Basic coding might be taken from windows but rest of the OS is freely developed by various individuals and companies as it is an open system and there are no copyrights so anyone can do anything with it, thats y Linux is gettin more n more used by organisations and programmers.
