Is it possible to damage your motherboard due to faulty installation of open source OS's?

First off, yes I am a noob, but I’m trying to learn. I’m going to try out a Linux based OS, but my motherboard’s instructions only mention support for Windows 2000, and XP. If I try to install a different OS anyway could I possibly do permanent damage to my motherboard?

No, try it. It’s safe. But I would recommend running linux in microsoft virtual pc or vmware to see if you like it first.
no it’s impossible
nope your computer can still be put back the way it was.
oh and if you want you could make a dual boot PC so you would have windows and linux
no but you could damage your harddrive. use a knoppix live cd to test on a cd!
or use the free version of microsoft virtual pc
It is safe to try installing any Linux distros, worst case scenario is the system won’t install properly or boot up after installations. And if that happens, just remove all Linux partitions and reinstall the OS that you had.
