Is it okay to put Linux 2008 OS on an HP?

My uncle gave me a HP which he got from Walmart. He reformatted it but it doesn’t recognize any OS (it had Windows XP before). The sticker on the computer says it’s designed for Windows XP but I just bought Linux OS 2008 and want to try it. Will it screw anything up? I don’t want to pay 0+ for Windows XP or even deal with Microsoft anymore.

No, Linux couldn’t possibly screw up a PC that doesn’t have any other operating system on it. You have absolutely nothing to lose.
If you have already wiped out the existing xp operating system then I don’t understand why you are worrying. Running or trying to run Linux OS 2008 will not affect your system in any way. If you don’t like just wipe it out and you are back where you were before.
If you are still running xp then you will want to dual boot ie run the both together that way you can try out linux without leaving yourself without a functioning operating system should you make a hash of the linux installation.
I use ubuntu linux and fedora core. Can recommend both of these and they both have large user communities which be able to help with any installation problems or any other problems you run to after you get up and running. Welcome to the club
I have installed several versions of linux on my HP laptop. No problem, other than a sound issue.
You say you "bought" Linux. I hope if you bought a CD you didn’t pay more than $4.00, if even that much, because most distros are available free. A reformatted harddrive won’t be damaged by installing Linux.
