In Pan's Labyrinth the part of where Ofelia has to place the mandrake under her mother's bed was it supposed

to take the form of her brother or save her mom’s life? I know the faun explains that a mandrake was a plant who always wished to be human so which human was it supposed to save or be? or am i just lost.

Health only, it was meant to heal and nothing more.
But I knew someone was going to die as soon as it started to scream. The old saying is that if you hear a mandrake plant scream when ripped from it’s roots, someone close to you or yourself are about to die.
Save her Mom’s life, it was for her health only. That was why she got sick as soon as it was removed.
it was to show that as the mandrake became stronger, so did her mother. that’s why when the step dad burns it her mothers health goes to pot! but the brother is healthy, so it was to save the mother.
