My computer is asking me which application to use to open a file, but I don’t know where the applications are stored in Linux. Is it in the bin folder? I am trying to find openoffice.

It depends on which version of Linux you are using. I believe the most common convention is for the executables to be in /usr/bin but they may also be in /usr/local/bin
I’m using Ubuntu, and my executables are in /usr/bin/
If you are using Ubuntu most applications can be found in the Synaptic Package Manager (also applies to Linux Mint)
