If Microsoft had made windows open source 27 yrs ago how advanced do you think it would be today?
Knowledge is a wonderful thing
Given that Linux Open Source Software has only been in existence for 19 yrs. the advancement in advanced technology it has made over this passed 5 yrs for the home user is unbelievable, There are professional people world wide developing professional free operating systems and software for the home users, for education, from 3yr olds to university,
Computing for the blind or visually impaired computer users:
Do you know any blind or visually impaired computer users: if so then check out this web link. Better still inform the Blind Society in your area about this free software for the blind or visually impaired

Open Source in Education :- Preschool, Primary, Secondary Tertiary ( university level )
Inform your education departments this can save the tax payers millions of Pounds/Dollars

Computer and Internet Security Anti-Tamper – Software Protection

These are just some of the achievements made with Free open source software for the benefit of home computer users.
The question being asked, had Microsoft windows been made Open Source Software. Would we be having this kind of excellence in security, stability and software development
Quot- Vomit
There would be fifty billion different Windows distros
Answer
Only the top 20 would succeed Like Linux top 20 distros have. Open Source Software has very high standards

Hi Carling
I hope you are well , and not suffering from some slight stomach upset.
As this is a bit outside the box for you.
we all know how open source has changed even the events at Microsoft, they have to do all sorts of jumps through hops they would never have had to do if Linux and the like had not come along.
the programs for the blind and partially sighted being one of them.
As it happens one of my lady amateur radio operators is over the moon with her laptop being virtually blind it gives her all sorts of new freedom, however i can’t get her and her husband to see the linux as a better deal at present.
but due to the open source at least Microsoft are making the effort.
i will be delving into the websites you have given me.
AS to how far it would have come if it had started earlier is any ones guess but i wonder what the makers of DR Dos would have made of it back then as they where uncle bill’s first competition.
Are you just trying to advertise?
If Microsoft had made Windows open source. Well, let’s learn from the bulk of open source, shall we?
Well, the good:
-Windows might actually make sense as a webserver or cluster node.
-Steve Ballmer (a chimp stuffed into a suit and dipped in Nair) might not be the CEO.
-Maybe MS would spread less FUD and BS. Wishful thinking.
The bad:
-There would be fifty billion different Windows distros and it would be a pain to make sure that software runs properly on all or even most of them.
-The landscape would be ruled by anal neckbeards who launch colossal flamewars over minute changes and which direction things would go, gumming up the works and fragmenting the platform further as everything is forked a hundred times over based on which corner the close button is in.
-There would be a handful of distros with a usable interface and the rest would likely be archaic.
-Support would likely be even worse than it is now.
The unknowable:
-Security may or may not be better. It’s impossible to say as Linux or any other OS would need to have enough desktop marketshare to be as worthy a target. Open source does not always mean super-secure, partly because most of the people who find these flaws aren’t going to tell the community without doing so via an active exploit. There is malware out there for Linux. There isn’t much, but Linux has a meager desktop share. Server exploits are far more rare because the sysadmin likely isn’t an idiot who is going to fire up the webserver and click ad banners all day.
-The bulk of computer users have the IQ of a carrot and no OS is immune to install-and-authenticate malware.
Believe it or not Carling (We know the answer to that), open source does not equal superior in every way. Sometimes it makes good sense to use it. Sometimes it doesn’t. No single tool is perfect for every job.
Ummmm…no, Carling. There are far more than 20 distros of Linux, and a LOT of open source software I’ve seen and used have had some of the most horrifically awful UIs I’ve ever seen and were riddled with bugs and issues. How does open source have high standards when any bozo can whip up some code, open source it, and toss it onto Sourceforge? Only projects that get some serious development and time wind up with something better, and even then it’s not guaranteed. The problem is that most programmers may be able to write some lean and mean code, but don’t know (or don’t care) how to make a good user interface to save their lives.
And even then, 20 distros is one helluva platform fragmentation.
If that had happened the nerd would not have gotten the hot babe, island fortress and the hot babe. 3 billion clam shells buys alot of influence, among other things.
And yes, Bill and Steve bought a Linux spin, sort of.
Is not free, but they need more clam shells and stuff to buy a planet.
