if you dual boot you could probably use something like virtual box to boot up your windows 7 like a virtual machine and then use office from there. If you’re feeling frisky you could try wine to install it in the ubuntu side, if wine fails then use the virtualbox vm of windows.
No, Microsoft Office is not compatible with Linux. But Ubuntu comes with Open Office. This set of office productivity tools is very similar to Microsoft Office.
I see two options,
1) Dualboot Ubuntu + Windows, use Office on Windows.
2) Alternative, get something like OpenOffice
yes but you would need to download WINE (its a program to emulate windows programs)
Ubuntu 10.10 net-book edition sucks. Get the desktop edition for the Net-book that you’ve brought. The new net-book edition has many problems with it so i don’t recommend you to use it.
As for Microsoft Office, You can use wine to install it on Ubuntu.
there are good replacements like IBM Lotus Symphony and Open Office which you’ll find installed by default in Ubuntu.
Jeez. Another Linux hypocrite. Go ahead and dump Windows. Just use OpenOffice. That’s the baby’s version of Microsoft Office, an almost useless, witless copy. Just don’t expect to share documents, spreadsheets, or presentations with real professionals.
The truth is that you can use Microsoft Office in Linux by using WINE (I did that for some time). WINE allows you to use "windows software". However, it is not 100% the same. For example, if you use mathtype, there are many times when it does not work or when it works with flaws. But for "regular use" it works as in Windows. It is not easy as it sounds for a newbie. You have to "configure" WINE to be able to use Microsoft Office. There are many guides online and it is a matter of just following instructions.
So, to summarize: It is possible to do it using WINE, but it requires configuration.
There are two ways you could go.
1. You could set it up as dual-boot, so when you first turn it on you can choose either Ubuntu or Windows. Use Windows for Microsoft Office.
2. You could just use Ubuntu, and download Open Office, which is a freeware replacement for Microsoft Office. (I use it and it seems to work pretty well!)
