If I boot ubuntu linux OS from a flash drive to keep my original OS, will it still save files on the HD?

I want the new Ubuntu netbook remix on my new acer but just want to boot it each time from a SD card, to keep my XP OS, but will it still retrieve documents, and things I have DL on to it each time I boot up, or will they be erased. I am very new to this so any information would be useful.

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ .It is possible to resize the casper-rw file in most linux distros to make a persistent save when installed on a flashdrive. Running an installation via SD card would be painfully slow and may not work with some. Flash drives are not as quick as your computer but tolerable and useable. I do not know about a persistent save on a installation of netbook remix on flash. If you check the site mentioned you’ll probably find something useful. Make sure it is a usb installation with persistent save or configure the casper-rw yourself. It’s not that rough. Also…be sure you can boot from usb in your bios. Otherwise, this does you no good. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1172722 .Read here also.
