Also I noticed that all new laptops that come with linux installed have a very small hard drive. why is that?

I have checked over the specs. of your Laptop

I thoroughly recommend you take a look at Linux Mint 7 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 7 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation
Linux Mint 7 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

It seems like many of the laptops with linux preinstalled have limited specs, probably to keep the price low.
I would suggest that you get a few livecds of distros that interest you and try them out to see how they work with your particular hardware, or how difficult it would be to change the config file to get it working. Since you appear to be new to linux I would suggest that you start with a distro that is easy to use and install. Be sure to read the instructions for installing and using that distro.
Here are a few links.
Good luck
