I have a copy of SUSE Linux 10. How do I install to XP and how can I update to 11.2? Also, is Ubuntu better?

I want to install SUSE onto my laptop, but here’s the thing: I don’t know how. I also want to update to the new version, but I don’t know if I can or if it’s free. Lastly, is Ubuntu better, because I might just go with that too (if Ubuntu I’d need directions on installing too.). Thanks!

I would recommend Ubuntu personally, as it’s the only distro of Linux that I’ve not had problems with so far. If you want to go for Ubuntu, or even SUSE, then you will need to burn the OS to a CD, or DVD, first. In most cases the download comes in ISO format, and I can confirm that this is the case with both Ubuntu and SUSE. It is easy, and free (apart from the actual disc), to burn a disc.

BURNING UBUNTU/SUSE TO A CD/DVD
==========================
1. Download and install CDBurnerXP: http://www.filehippo.com/download_cdburnerxp/ .
2. Open CDBurnerXP and choose the option to burn an ISO file.
3. Browse for the ISO file, check the settings (usually the defaults are fine – just make sure that "verify the disc…" is selected, otherwise you could open up a whole bag of worms when installing), then click ‘burn disc’.

INSTALLING UBUNTU/SUSE
==========================
1. Put the Ubuntu/SUSE CD/DVD in the drive, and restart your computer.
2. If the CD/DVD doesn’t boot, and you go straight into Windows, then you will have to change your BIOS settings to boot from the CD/DVD drive before the hard disc drive. It should be set like this anyway, in case there is a problem.

3. Once you get to the Ubuntu/SUSE CD/DVD menu, VERIFY THE DISC. This is extremely important, as you could corrupt the entire installation if there is a problem with the data on the CD/DVD.
4. Installation steps for each of these distro’s is different, so refer to the support section of the relevant website (links below).
