That is a good question. I was once in the same situation as you were. I did a lot of research. Lot of vendors offer linux and since its open source you can download it for free. I highly recommend UBUNTU 8.10 which is the latest version. UBUNTU has very good features and is good for beginners if you are migrating from windows. You dont have to learn anything to start using it. Gradually when you get used to u can use the command mode to learn.
Note: Linux and Windows are different in many aspects. At first you might not enjoy linux but after a while you will love it.
you can download it from http://www.ubuntu.com
Ubuntu is probably the easiest, and most popular. You can use it without knowing anything about command line *NIX, or if you want to hone your skills it’s completely versatile. The package manager is great, a lot of free open source software can be had with the click of a button.
I recommend Ubuntu. It is easy to install and use.
Any will work fine for programming and learning unix commands.
If you just want to know how it works, and do not particularly care too, too much about a stable environment (ie: specifically installed programs beyond the default), knoppix would serve you well. It runs entirely off of a CD (no install) and will let you use the terminal as well as do some development work. just make sure that you save your stuff to a USB key or something because when you turn off the computer, it’s all gone.
If you want to install something, ubuntu/kubuntu is quite popular. Fedora/Red Hat, OpenSuSe are all well known/respected.
