how to optimize to best performance a linux OS?

i have to computers, one with ubunt 8.10 and another with kubuntu 8.10,
the computers are not so powerfulness and i would like to put them to best performance, ;::. in windows xp i can do it , but the apearnce is not so good by doing it.
