I have played enough with LFS and BLFS (http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/) to know that I'm happy that their is a community of thousands of volunteers to create binary packages, and I only need to resort to source in the rare need that there isn't a Deb package. Maybe ask what you are trying to accomplish, a live CD, a custom install, or whatever. The beauty of Debian package system, you don't have to do use a brainless install if you don't want to. You can install a bare minimum system, and then add and customize the blocks you want on top. I guessing you don’t know how deep the rabbit hole goes in creating a distribution.
