kiwi might be able to help you make your own distro should be in your repos for ubuntu
There have been several articles on doing this in issues of Linux Format and Linix Pro (aka Linux Magazine outside of US) over the last 8 months or so.
I guessing you don’t know how deep the rabbit hole goes in creating a distribution. I have played enough with LFS and BLFS (http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/) to know that I’m happy that their is a community of thousands of volunteers to create binary packages, and I only need to resort to source in the rare need that there isn’t a Deb package.
Maybe ask what you are trying to accomplish, a live CD, a custom install, or whatever. The beauty of Debian package system, you don’t have to do use a brainless install if you don’t want to. You can install a bare minimum system, and then add and customize the blocks you want on top.
