How to install Linux as secondary OS on existing Windows Vista/XP?

I already have 2 computers each with Windows Vista and XP Prof and I would like to add Linux as secondary OS and be able to select the OS during the boot sequence.
What is a simpler way to do this? ..that is without formatting Hard disk or re-installing Windows?
Thanks in advance!

START BY PARTITIONING HD, GO TO THIS LINK,FULL EXPLANATION http://apcmag.com/how_to_dualboot_vista_with_linux_vista_installed_first.htm
on each one, just go through the installation and when it asks choose manually resize… resize your original partitions as you wish, but you will need a main partition at about 8GB (mounted as /) and you will need a swap partition equal to about double your ram.
good luck…
If you try to install Linux (in particular Ubuntu) I know it will give you the option to install it as a second OS. Be aware that you will be FORCED to re-format part of your HDD since Linux doesn’t use the same format as Windows. You may want to ‘tweak’ the boot manager after the install to make Windows the default OS (if that’s your desire) since Ubuntu will assign itself as the default…
