if your looking to add a program to the list you can add a icon to the top panel by right clicking on it and add a launcher or add a custom launcher. very simple to do. also depending on which linux os you are using you can add it to the drop down menu.
As Beryl said you can use the package manager that you have in your menu to install programs or try this new site.
