depends…
if you just want a minimual command line environment to run a server of some kind (firewall, web aso.) a 100 MEGAbytes will be more then enough; you’ll need another partition for the data, though.
if you are looking for a fully featured desktop with all the blows and whistles 30 GB is a fair minimum;
you may want to have a separate FAT32 partition for your data (20, 30 Gig…); upgrading linux isn’t always quite that obvious and after a while you may just feel like making a fresh start, thus reinstalling everything from scratch; having the data on a different partition comes in handily, then.
ANYWAY, you’ll need a dedicated SWAP partition which should be (@ least) twice your RAM
apropos, RAM; a fully fledged KDE (or Gnome, for that matter) will require 1GB of RAM, to run smoothly; 512MB is definitely going to be frustrating, but good enough for a start; just plan your SWAP partition for expension (4 to 6GB partition size)
good luck!
