How long will Microsoft monopoly last?

I am interested in picking up Linux skill, but will it be worth it because still 95% of desktop OS is Microsoft Windows. Not sure about the servers, but I would have to say at least about 50%??
Will Linux beat Microsoft? How long will it take? Maybe not in our life time?

It’s not that Microsoft has a monopoly. It’s just that they had a better OS when they started and good business sense to market it well. It’s still one of the best Operating Systems and people find it really easy to use. So they’ll keep on going until someone comes out with an OS that’s even easier for the lazy people. Meanwhile, their softwares are really great and even people that use Apple or Linux use Microsoft office software on their computer.
I think if you’re a programmer, than you definitely need to learn Unix, Linux, and Apple OS, otherwise, just stick to Microsoft because they’re not going anywhere.
Unless something extraordinary happens I would see it to continue well past my lifetime.
actually, its not exactly the truth, because companies use both Microsoft and UNIX example: Solaris, HP-UNIX, IBM-UNIX
if you want learn about linux download distros<try many of them and see whi one is good for you>
I’ve posted few links, check them out.
good luck

There are many people who will hate me for saying this but, it is the reality.
The concept of Linux is great. But in reality its useless.
People dont want the hassle of Linux with their custom complied kernels or the 5000 applications the OS comes with.
People want something stable, something reliable and something that can get the job done.
I dont want to have to search 5 hours to get NVIDIA driver that are compatible to my distribution. I dont want the hassle.
I would rather pay MS however much they want to get something that does the job for me, rather than having something free that doesnt do much for me.
And for that reason, Linux will not get anywhere. Untill there is one, only one mainstream variant Linux, Linux will not get anywhere. Unfortunately because of the concept of Linux, there will not be one variant Linux.
The Linux kernel is good, very good. But the diversity among the distributions is what will, in my opinion, be the downfall of Linux as a whole.
Linux will never beat MS in my opinion, no matter how much anyone wants.
There are many people out there who use Linux. But its not for the layman, atleast at this point.
As for servers, there are probobly more Linux based servers out then than MS based ones. But MS is fighting back, GoDaddy is (or has) switching to MS servers.
If Linux is to stand a chance, the distrubutions will have to follow a common foundation in how they distribute software.
But the saddest thing I see about Linux is:
People get too attached to one particular variant and hate everything else.
There are plenty of people who swear by FreeBSD (not really linux) or Fedora or Slackware. And they hate everything. The Slackware camp will hate Fedora and the Fedora users will hate everything that isnt fedora, etc.
I dont think Linux will overtake Windows. But if it does have, it wont be any time soon.
