I am using a HP Compaq with an AMD Turion 64 x2 processor, and a Broadcom wireless card.

Since the broadcom cards do not carry licence free driver support for Linux, you will need to install a non-gpl kernel of the same version as the original, or the madwifi driver set. It is not allowed to be distributed with the original kernel.
