how nice are you to your application? again how nice do you want your applications to be. Google can be more helpful then anyone person, but even more helpful in linux is the greatest command ever created.
man
people write them for a reason. Also off the top of my head I can’t remember the exact syntax. I don’t use nice very often/ renice
man nice
man renice
google nice
google renice
"nice howto"
"renice howto"
You may want to look into VirtualBox. It will let you run a bunch of OS’s by setting up virtual machines. I have a few different flavours of Linux, and Windows configured on multiple virtual machines on my Mac. It’s nice because you do not have to reboot to use them and the clipboard is shared between OS X and the virtual machines that are running.
You can re-nice applications on Linux to allow them to play nicer with others by changing the CPU priority. The command is nice (just do a "man nice" in the terminal to see how it works). This command exists in OS X also, of course.
You can also use cpulimit on linux. See URL’s
