How do I install Linux on my laptop?
I would like to install Linux as my main operating system on my laptop. I currently have windows XP installed on my Compaq Presario 700. I am having major problems with my laptop and this seems like a perfect time to start over and learn some stuff about linux. I would like to wipe out everything on this laptop, Windows included and start fresh with linux. My main use of this laptop is "internet surfing/learning linux" as it is a little older and I have better computers for other applications.
Here are my system stats,
900mhz mobile AMD processor
256MB RAM
CD rom and floppy drive
So my question is, where do I start? How can I wipe out everthing on this computer and install Linux?

Hi,
If u want to install Linux ,get the cd for installation.
Start installation and rest of the things are done by Linux only.
Installation process is same as Windows only.It will ask u about partitioning and formating so select as per your need.
There is one flavor of Linux called KNOPPIX ,If u do not want to install and just learn Linux ,U can use that.U need to have bootable disc of Knoppix and it will load OS from cd only ,no installtion required.
find the copy of linux u want pop it in your cd rom drive, let your laptop boot from cd follow the steps until u get to the disk partition part and you will have an option to delete all parions or somthing like that
Here go download fedora core 6. you can download it at http://www.fedora.org . Just download it and then have the linux os burned to a dvd. When the process is complete restart the computer and enter your BIOS, usually tapping the delete key or F1, F2. Set the cd to first boot and hdd to second save and exit by pressing F10 key and hit y and enter. Let dvd boot up and start the partion and formating process its all on the cd. Good luck
