I know of more games that are for Microsoft than there is for Apple Inc. and Linux. How come the other two never really entered the video game market?

Microsoft has a wider user base than OSX or Linux so more money can be made by selling these games on Windows; as OSX is becoming more popular, more games will be developed to run on it.
Linux is quite a limited operating system based on user base and software availability, if more software became available, more people would use it, which would result in more games being developed to run on it.
Because microsoft has a strangle hold in the market place. If you were a game developer would you want 5-20% potential customers or 80%. It’s a no brainer..
microsoft is the oldest and most games are probally made on microsoft computers so its easier than to convert it to a mac version.
Thanks to WINE, the Windows compatibility layer that runs on Linux and Mac, Windows games can be used in alternative operating systems. Microsoft uses extremely harsh tactics to keep their operating systems on the store shelves. Additionally, they offer perks to software developers who make software ONLY for their operating system. Software developers are starting to see that more and more people are switching to Linux (especially Linux because it is FREE) and Mac because they do not get viruses and they have other benefits. Check out the "Humble Indie Bundles" on a yahoo search and you will see what I mean. Though Linux is not a huge gaming platform, it is growing.
