I’m new to Linux mandriva and i don’t know what codecs to use to get the dvd to play. I’m trying to play the video through the movie player that comes with the operating system, and i keep getting a message saying "cannot read from source" and my dvd is brand new, only used once or twice

Here is the Official Mandriva DVD Playback Documentation http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Docs/Desktop/Multimedia/Video#DVD_Playback
LUg.
You need libdvdcss to play encrypted dvds
You should be able to use this package:
http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/1.2.9/rpm/libdvdcss2-1.2.9-1.i386.rpm
Or you can compile it from source:
http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/1.2.9/libdvdcss-1.2.9.tar.bz2
You need libdvdcss, its available in the easy urpmi repo. Go here http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ add the PLF media, refresh the package manager and install codecs and VLC
as well as the above it is always a good idea to get vlc by searching for it in ‘add or remove programs’
you will have to get used to which media player works best with which media
I am surprised that with mandriva 2009 that you weren’t offered the codecs when you needed them. The same applies to the video drivers for nvidia cards. In my experience 2009 does this automatically. If you load ‘konversation’, an IRC program, you should automatically get the ‘#mandriva’ channel loaded and they will help you with all newbie questions. (if the #mandriva channel isn’t opened: type ‘/join #mandriva’)
