Most Operating System discs today are bootable. This means that you should be able to start the installation by placing the disc in the drive immediately after it is turned on. If this doesn’t work, it’s likely the following:
->The Boot sequence is set to boot from a hard drive or floppy first instead of the CD/DVD drive. You will need to adjust this so that the CD/DVD drive will boot first. To adjust these settings, you’ll have to access the computer’s BIOS, which is commonly accessible by DEL or F2 shortly after powering on the computer. It may require other keys to be pressed, but these provided are the most common. Some computers do allow you to make a one-time override on the boot sequence by pressing F12 as well.
->The installation CD/DVD is older and doesn’t support bootable installation. It is also possible that if this disc is burned, it may be of a size or format that is not recognized by the drive. I’ve experienced some situations where the burned disc using the 700MB CDs will not work compared to the 650MB CD. You can try using different formats that are compatible or upgrade the drive to a more recent model.
As a side note, installing other operating systems may overwrite your current system unless you’ve created a separate partition or drive for to occupy.
Hi,
To start, you need free un-partition space on your disk.
If your WinXP is using all your disk space you need to re-partition first. You can do that with Partition Magic.
A free 30 trail version available from
http://www.symantec.com/nl/nl/home_homeoffice/products/overview.jsp?pcid=sp&pvid=pm80
Then you need al bootable Linux Redhat cd or dvd.
Just boot from that cd or dvd and you will get an installation menu which you just have to follow..
Hope this get you started.
