there are several word processors available in linux. StarOffice and OpenOffice are both capable of saving files directly into MS Word format. (just use "save as" and choose the ms word format.)
Are you saving your documents in MS .doc format? MS Word cannot read Open Office native format (.odt).
In linux, open the file and save as.. .txt or doc
OR
You can download plugins from microsoft for whatever format you have the file in. Google it.

Ensure you save your files created in Ubuntu Linux as *.doc, *.rft or *.txt. Those formats will open perfectly fine in Microsoft Office. I’m sure that OpenOffice supports saving to *.doc (which would be preferred if you’re sharing with Office Word users). Alternatively you could use WINE on your Linux system and run Microsoft Office yourself, thus creating native *.doc files.
If you save your documents as .rtf (rich text format) almost all word processing and editor programs will open them and retain the format of your original document.
