Linux Mint has recently become the most popular distro.
http://linuxmint.com/
You can download it for free on that website, and get instructions on how to install it. There is a good following on the forums if you need help.
Good luck.
Download one of the free installation images of the Linux distro you want. Ubuntu is common, as is Linux Mint.
Burn the image to a DVD or CD.
Boot from the disk you burned.
Follow the on-screen instructions.
You could also do a WUBI installation, where you install Linux through Windows, and have both on your computer. It’ll take up some hard disk space, though.
How do you change?
1) cautiously 2) keep an open mind, 3) be prepared to have teething difficulties 4) expect both the amazing and the annoying
You get an installation medium. Easiest…get a cover disc from a Linux magazine. these come with instructions on how to install.
DIY option…
1) download the ISO file of the distro (from distrowatch.com or the the website of the distro you want)
2) burn the ISO to a blank CD/DVD using something like ISOBurnerner
3) Set you computer to boot from the CD…as you computer starts quickly go into the BIOS settings and set you computer to boot from CD/DVD rather than the hard drive…usually F2, F11, or F12 key will take you to set up.
4) restart the computer with the CD you have created in your drive.
Good luck
