I haven’t tried any of the new versions of linux so before I waste any time installing an OS, I want to make sure its the best. My general options are either Ubuntu 10.04, Mandriva Powerpack 2010 or Fedora 13. I would like your opinions on which is the best concerning performance, appearance, visual and desktop effects, security, etc. Thanks a lot.

definitely ubuntu.
I;m using Linux Mint 9 and I love it. It’s based on Ubuntu, it’s very easy to use and has every software that you could need. I even got some Windows software to run after opening it with Wine. It’s also very fast and internet browsing is a lot faster than it was with Windows. I definitely recommend Mint, try it and you won’t go wrong.
I’m not sure if anyone else has noticed but my laptop battery seems to last a lot longer with Linux than it did with Windows, it could be my imagination but I’m sure I’m right.
I’d have to agree with a lot of the posters. Ubuntu is very good, yet it can get buggy if you are using a on board video with an intel 8xxx chip set. Worth a shot if you have a discreet graphics cards, but somewhat trouble some if all you have is an on board system.
As for the others, the basic Linux system is pretty standard accross distributions.
Mint is probably the best for new users, yet it also has crashing problems with the intel chip set;.
I’ve heard the Ubuntu is the best so far, I used a bit of Red Hat Linux a couple years ago, so I don’t know if Red Hat is still a viable version, I wanted to load it on our server but the program I wanted to serve wasn’t compatible and it would’ve been hell trying to get windows me PCs to recognize it and work with it properly, so I abandoned the project.
Ubuntu would be the best and the easiest and friendliest one to use. Fedora is little more advanced but not as friendly. Ubuntu’s requirements aren’t that high and the OS is fantastic for hacking (making visual and desktop effects, customizing type of hacking, not the stealing information type of hacking).
I would recommend Linux Mint 9 which is a Ubuntu based distro. Fedora is the testing grounds of Red Hat, Red Hat 6 will be equal to that of Fedora 12. I feel that Fedora run more smoothly than Ubuntu, Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) is a rolling edition, but has not matured completely yet. It is more responsive than Ubuntu. Fedora by default has more of a Server based GUI while Ubuntu looks prettier. I have never used Mandriva though I heard that it was very user friendly under the name mandrake. Mepis was a good distro also.
I would personal recommend Linux mint though.
Why don’t you install and separate the Partitions /, swap, /tmp, & /home that way if you want to install again you can keep your /home folder in tact.
The easiest to use out of the box is Mint. With ubuntu, they do not use any non opensource software. So to make multimedia play you will have to install some software.
If visual and desktop effects are a concern then use the K desktop environment (KDE), Gnome is rather ugly. For destop effects use a program called Compiz/Beryl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD7QraljRfM.
The good thing about linux is you can use different desktop environments with most of the distributions. KDE can be installed with ubuntu making it kubuntu. I’m sure Mint is the same way. There is another called Sabayon that is pretty good http://www.sabayon.org/.
Most of the distros will allow you boot from a livecd. This will allow you to boot from the cd of the distro without making changes to your system or hard drive. This will allow you to get a look and feel of that distro.
A good place to go for many distributions is Distrowatch http://distrowatch.com/
