Help with Linux and installing xchat?
I’m real new to linux and i’ve tried to look up how to do it and have failed at all the tutorials that i could find… i’m running opensuse 10.2 and have an AMD Athlon 64 3700+ with 1 gb ram. first off, with linux, i’m trying to figure out what, when i’m downloading versions of files, extensions like x86_64 and i686 mean – and how i figure out which one of them my computer is running on – does it have to do with the kernel?
now with xchat, could someone please tell me how to install this program through console? the file name is xchat-2.8.2-4.guru. suse102.x86_64.rpm – the website i am downloading off of is http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/rpm-navigation.php?cat=Network/xchat/
thanks!

have you tried installing it with yum or wtf your package manager is instead of downloading it? I think it would be yum xchat but i’m an apt fan so I don’t know. btw you are probably using an x86 pc. it has to do with the type of cpu you have. x86 is the standard 32 bit pentium4, celeron, athlon, all those, and x86_64 is 64 bit cpus like core2 and all those amd ones besides athlon. it also has to do with your os; you can run a 32 bit os on a 64 bit pc but not the other way around. if you are running a 32 bit os on a 64 bit pc you use the 32 bit one. unless your computer is less than 5 months old, it almost assuredly has a x86 cpu. a i686 is a version of x86 but usually it doesn’t matter what version it is as long as it’s not a pentium mmx or something ancient like that.
As the other poster recommended, install it through your package manager. Xchat is 6 clicks away with Ubuntu’s synaptic manager; 8 if you don’t want to scroll.
