type startx to start your x-windows session or change the runlevel in the /etc/inittab to say id:5:initdefault instead of id:3:initdefault. Then properly reboot and if doesn't start up into the gui you need to reinstall and make sure you choose KDE or gnome (KDE is what the creator of linux prefers). Also your video card may not be supported.

While I've never used Mandriva, perhaps no Xorg environment was installed when you installed it on to your machine? Do you remember selecting it from a list of packages to be installed?

If you're interested, here are some other, very newbie-friendly distros:

http://opensuse.org/ (I am using this distro to write this)
http://freespire.org/
http://xandros.com/

Perhaps one of those will work better for you!
