Having trouble installine AIM on Linux?
First, my details:
-I’m running Fedora Core 8.
-I’m using the RPM from AIM’s website to install the package.
-I’m on the root account.
-I’m connected to the internet.
When I install the package, I get an error while resolving the dependencies. The exact error is:
Error resolving dependencies
Unable to resolve dependencies for some packages selected for installation.
Anyone know how to fix this?

Ubuntu Linux is a fake distro. It is legal to still open source software and rename it since it’s open source. But doesn’t not mean that it’s a good thing. Ubuntu is packages taken from Debian Linux and renamed with the Ubuntu name at the end. Of course most Ubuntu people are newbies and will deny this but all patches, bug reports and so on from Ubuntu are lifted directly from Debian. Even the change logs are Debian. You should keep this in mind. If you use a clone or hack you will get second hand support. If you want to use a Debian based distro I would suggest that you use Debian and give them the credit they deserve.
You can install aim on Linux. But it’s not the same as the windows aim. It has no features and is not worth your time. The pidgin program is the one you really want. It used to be called gaim until aol sued them for the name. But it is the only full powered GTK based messenger and will work with aim msn and all the rest.
If you are using the KDE desktop you can also use Kopete.
The aim program from the aol website is probably so far out of date. It’s not the fault of your distro and would not make it better to use Ubuntu. It’s just they are offering there own messed up package is all. But you probably don’t have that package available though fedora since it’s not really an opensource program. Again the pidgin is the app you want. And it will be in your fedora. You could also just download the aim tarball extract it and launch the program from inside the folder. I have done this myself but again the program really sucks and is not worth your time.
Im not positive about fedora, but Im ruing ubuntu and it came preinstalled with an im client called pidgin that included aim. but if you really want the official aim one, I’d need the file extension on the package your installing in order to solve your problem. and if you are willing to settle for an outside client, just search the add/remove apps in application>add/remove apps for aim.
sorry to say this is why I never recomend anything but ubutnu based distros they are tons easier to install apps then the other distros IE slackware and red hat distros are a pain for newbies to much command line. I havent had to make a comand line entry in months and hope to never do it again ubuntu has far more support out there then the other distros
