Make sure you have applied all Updates to the new system, necessary to start using the Linux Software Repository which Ubuntu named "Ubuntu Software Center"…. (System > Update Manager)
System > Ubuntu Software Center > Sound And Video ….. if you are talking music stuff. A good handful of programs for this like MIDI and drums etc.
You can try SourceForge as well to look for what is created for Linux and always note the security warning about "third party software" installations to Linux. Better be well known in the community before installing unknown software outside the Software Repository.
Also you can check out Audacity for Linux.
Browse the software center for science and engineering / biology
Tools there to allign sequences, convert between formats, and create phylogenetic trees.
Anything more specialized you may have to source from colleagues for from source rather than packages. Wine may also be able to run some fo the various tools developed for windows as well.
