does windows xp and mandriva linux go together well?

i have winXP installed and want to install mandriva linux too. is it advisable? what steps should i take to install linux? (i have not installed linux before) like creating a separate partition and stuff….?

Yes its always safe to have Mandriva.
Just take care while partitioning the drive with linux installation CD, if you want to, dont let it format itself. Choose the disk to be formated by yourself and make the format option.

Yes, Mandriva is pretty safe. So is Ubuntu. I believe Mandriva will automatically repartition your drive, saving your data and Windows XP system if you so chose.
What you are looking for is a dual boot situation. This is where you have two operating systems on one computer and can choose which one to use whenever the computer starts.

Linux is always a journey, take it slow and seek help from the community.
I would say install them on different machines.
Make sure you dont try to install linux on ntfs partition.
