Does files made in Linux OpenOffice work when you open them in Microsoft Office?

I really want to try Ubuntu Linux but I’m scared that if I switch to Ubuntu and use OpenOffice, I will have a hard time viewing the files I did using a computer running on Windows. Help!

MS Office will open file made in openOffice quite handily as long as you save them as .rtf or .doc extensions.
One caveat is that openOffice can’t open the new .docx saved from Office 2007 yet (neither can any other version of Office.) Fortunately, you can save them as .doc or .rtf from inside of office to make them work.
For word documents I always save them as .rtf, and for other file types if I know that I would be viewing them on a windows pc I still use the MS format from OpenOffice. Otherwise I just save them as native openoffice format.
I’ve got 3 pc at home 2 on Ubuntu 1 on XP with word2007 and so far OO and MSO2007 have played quite well.
Also at work I’m slowly switching to Ubuntu while all my co workers are on 2000/XP and I’m able to open their files and I just save in MS office format when I need to send them documents.
