Do the mandrakes spoken of in Ancient writings still exist, are they ingested today? What exactly were they?
Genesis 30:16
When Jacob came in from the field in the evening, then Leah went out to meet him and said, "You must come in to me, for I have surely hired you with my son’s mandrakes." So he lay with her that night.
Song of Solomon 7:13
"The mandrakes have given forth fragrance; And over our doors are all choice fruits,Both new and old,Which I have saved up for you, my beloved.

I think Mandrakes might be one of the misinterpretations of the hebrew texts into King James english. A lot of the names for things made no sense in english so they chose words that people could make some sense of. An unknown name for a plant that was supposed to be exotic and powerful could easily have been called mandrake because it was regarded the same way.
I just would like to know how they grew mandrakes in the Middle East. The plants need MOIST but not wet, cool but not cold shady soil.
