Flavours of Linux are like political affliliations. Everyone has their favourite and will hate you if you don’t use theirs. Debian and Slackware have relatively steep learning curves but are very good once you get there. Mandrake and OpenSuSE are more user friendly supposedly. Redhat is actually Fedora on the desktop now which I hear has some problems.
