64bit OS and VM’s can run 64bit and 32bit programs. 16bit and below will not work on a 64but.
I run XP 32 bit, Windows 7 64 bit and Ubuntu 64 bit all on the same disk. Each on it’s own partition though. VM? I don’t know. Have never used it.
use Sun’s VirtualBox, it’s free and easy!
1) there is no issue running a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit platform whether virtualized or on the hardware.
2) to the person who said that it’s compiled for AMD platforms, it’s actually the same thing. x86_64, x64, AMD64, and EM64-T are all names for the 64-bit versions of the Intel x86 instruction set.
3) Microsoft Virtual PC (which I assume is what you’re talking about) only supports WIndows 2000 and newer as gust operating systems, not Linux. They may work but they probably won’t. Like other people have said, you’ll want a different solution. VirtrualBox is the best free one but VMWare also makes a very good virtualization program.
Err, I was always under the impression that 64-bit referred strictly to the operating system. I’ve never bothered with Virtual Machine since a dual-partition is -a lot- less messy, so I have no personal experience as to whether it would have any specific issues with it. However, since the basic premise of Virtual Machine is to run other operating systems [specifically windows-based ones] inside of Windows, then I would guess that it -should- [keyword being "should" not "would"].
I’ve never used Micro$oft VM07 but I would perfer to partition the drive and install Linux by itself. I have a dual boot machine, right now I can access my window$ file system and use WINE to install and run window$ programs. If your system can run Compiz Fusion and the Emerald theme manager you can make your desktop look 10 times better than any version of window$ (or mac) could hope to be. The only thing I use window$ for anymore is occasionally playing games. Linux does everything else much better. If you’ve seen the "Droid Does" commercials it "Does" what it does because it’s based on LInux.
You can download Ubuntu in 64bit, but from what I see it is made for AMD processors. If I remember correctly, they have one called an alternative for use with other processors. I run 32bit Linux on a 64bit Intel computer, dual boot with Vista, but not Ubuntu. Don’t even notice anything out of the normal.
From what I know from the Microsoft site, their Virtual PC software only supports running Windwos guest systems, so you can’t run Linux with it. I recommend you use VirtualBox instead, it is free and it’s the best virtualization software that I ever used (get it from virtualbox.org).
I don’t think there will be a problem running a 32bit system under a 64bit system, but I never tried it. Try to boot it, and if it boots then you’re good to go.
